Today, computer networks are the norm in virtually every business environment. The data speeds are ever increasing, over faster media. Fiber Optic cable has the broadest bandwidth, but also carries the highest installation costs. This can be the determining factor for many companies, however it should not keep decision makers from exploring the long-term advantages of this infrastructure. Category 5E UTP (unshielded twisted pairs) has become the most widely used network infrastructure, but manufacturers are pushing Cat 6 or 7 designations as enhanced speeds over copper wiring.
We recommend fiber for your distribution if, your company is making a long-term commitment to its' existing building or campus. Should your company be leasing its' office space for less than 2 years before relocating, we recommend Cat 5E, Cat 6 or 7 Plenum. Manufacturers of category 6 & 7 copper wiring have spent millions of dollars on marketing and promotions to encourage higher speeds, over greater distances, thus should your applications require runs over 330 feet Cat 6 or 7 could be an alternative to fiber optics, but still have distance and bandwidth limitations.
It is widely known that your speed over bandwidth will be reduced as the data being transmitted passes from one media to another. Remember that the quality is reduced to the lowest common denominator in the network, which varies widely from one point to the other. Currently, networks are getting better than before, but still latency can be an issue, especially for heavy users.
Your business has the option of sharing the LOC's (Local Operating Company) established basic network, lease dedicated enhanced services e.g. ISDN PRI, DSL, Frame Relay, etc... or build your own private dedicated network (Intranet). Prices vary for services based upon the intensity of competition in your area. We recommend that you buy the best services you can afford. Its' likely you can't afford not to! After all your company's competitive edge may be hanging in the balance.
